McDowell County sits on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge — a transition zone between the high peaks of the Western NC mountains and the Piedmont foothills below. Three Delayed Harvest fisheries anchor the county's stocking program, making it one of the stronger DH counties in the state by sheer number of designated waters. The Catawba River runs through Marion and carries both a DH section along the greenway and a separate hatchery-supported section near Catawba Falls — two different experiences on the same river. Curtis Creek and Mill Creek round out the DH lineup. No April stocking anywhere in the county — the windows are March, May, and October only.

No April Stocking — McDowell County Runs on a Different Schedule

Unlike most WNC trout counties, McDowell County has no April stocking events. All waters stock in March and May — with the three Delayed Harvest streams also receiving a fall October event. If you're planning a trip around the typical April spring rush, you'll be fishing water that's already been worked over. The sweet spots are the weeks of Mar 9–13, May 11–15 (DH), and May 17–23 (HS).

Delayed Harvest Catawba River Adjacent to Marion Greenway · 2.0 miles · 5,607 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March, May & October
Most Heavily Stocked Water in McDowell County

At 5,607 fish stocked annually across three events, the Catawba River DH section along the Marion Greenway is the flagship fishery in the county. Greenway access makes this one of the most walkable and accessible Delayed Harvest rivers in the District 8 program — easy entry points, flat bankside terrain, and the river runs right through town.

Catawba River — Delayed Harvest (Marion Greenway) Two miles of Delayed Harvest water adjacent to the Marion Greenway in downtown Marion. Catch-and-release with artificial lures and single hooks only from October 1 through early June. Three stocking events annually — March, May, and October — totaling 5,607 fish. All three species: brook, rainbow, and brown trout in equal proportions each event. The fall October stocking is the highlight window: DH regulations keep pressure managed through the winter, and fish stack up in the deeper pools along the greenway corridor. Easy multi-access entry points make this fishable from multiple locations along its 2-mile length. 2.0 mi 35.6800, -82.0100 ↗

Delayed Harvest Curtis Creek Gamelands downstream of USFS Boundary at Deep Branch · 1.7 miles · 2,888 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March, May & October
National Forest & Game Land Setting

Curtis Creek runs through Pisgah National Forest and NC Game Lands — a dramatically different setting from the Marion Greenway Catawba section. Remote, heavily canopied, and tight. The USFS boundary at Deep Branch is the upper limit of the stocked DH section. Above that line, the water is National Forest stream under different regulations — confirm the boundary before fishing upstream.

Curtis Creek — Gamelands Downstream of USFS Boundary at Deep Branch 1.7 miles of Delayed Harvest water on the Game Land portion of Curtis Creek, downstream of the US Forest Service boundary at Deep Branch. Three stocking events annually — March, May, and October — totaling 2,888 fish. All three species in equal proportions each event. Curtis Creek Road (SR 1227) provides access through the game land corridor. The USFS boundary at Deep Branch is a critical landmark — DH regulations only apply to the stocked game land section below it. This is classic mountain creek character: cold, clear, wooded, and worth the drive. 1.7 mi 35.7200, -82.0600 ↗

Delayed Harvest Mill Creek US 70 Bridge to I-40 Bridge · 0.7 miles · 833 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March, May & October
Shortest DH Section in the County — 0.7 Miles

At 0.7 miles, Mill Creek is one of the shortest Delayed Harvest sections in the WNC program. The US 70 Bridge and I-40 Bridge mark the boundaries of a very compact fishery. Fish concentrate quickly in a short stretch after stocking — cover the water thoroughly before moving on. The highway corridor setting is not scenic, but fresh fish don't care about the view.

Mill Creek — US 70 Bridge to I-40 Bridge 0.7 miles from the US 70 Bridge downstream to the I-40 Bridge near Old Fort. The shortest Delayed Harvest section in McDowell County — and one of the more compact DH fisheries in the state. Three stocking events annually — March, May, and October. All three species per event. The tight 0.7-mile corridor means fish density is high immediately post-stocking. Work every pool and run systematically — in a stretch this short, leaving water unfished is leaving fish. 0.7 mi 35.6300, -82.1700 ↗

North Fork Catawba River — Headwaters to North Cove School Road at SR 1569 Bridge Eleven miles from the headwaters downstream to the North Cove School Road at the SR 1569 Bridge. The North Fork is the longest hatchery-supported stream in McDowell County and one of the more remote pieces of public trout water in the county — draining the high ridgeline country west of Marion. All three species stocked in equal March and May events. SR 1569 at the North Cove School Road provides a clear lower boundary access point. Fish density is highest in the lower section near SR 1569 immediately post-stocking as fish spread from the drop points. 11.0 mi 35.7500, -82.0900 ↗

Hatchery Armstrong Creek Cato Holler Lower Line to Greenlee Upper Line · 1.6 miles · 1,544 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March & May
⚠️ Game Land Boundary Lines — Know Your Section

Armstrong Creek's stocked section is defined by game land property lines — Cato Holler Lower Line at the upstream boundary and Greenlee Upper Line at the downstream boundary. These are not road intersections or bridges — they are game land boundary markers. Verify the exact boundary locations on the NCWRC game land maps before fishing to ensure you're within the stocked section.

Stream / Section Miles GPS
Armstrong Creek — Cato Holler Lower Line to Greenlee Upper Line 1.6 miles between the Cato Holler Lower Line and Greenlee Upper Line game land boundaries. Despite its short length, Armstrong Creek receives one of the highest stocking densities in the county at 1,544 fish across equal March and May events — nearly 965 fish per mile annually. All three species. That density makes Armstrong Creek extremely productive in the days immediately following a stocking event. The game land setting provides good solitude compared to the more visible Catawba River greenway section. 1.6 mi 35.7100, -82.0400 ↗

Hatchery Catawba River — Hatchery Supported Section Catawba Falls Campground to Old Fort Recreation Park · 2.0 miles · 918 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March & May
⚠️ Same River, Different Rules — Know Which Section You're In

The Catawba River has both a Delayed Harvest section (adjacent to the Marion Greenway) and a separate hatchery-supported section (Catawba Falls Campground to Old Fort Recreation Park). Standard HS regulations — all legal tackle, 7 trout/day creel limit — apply to this section only. DH catch-and-release rules do not apply here. Confirm which section you are fishing before wetting a line.

Catawba River — Catawba Falls Campground to Old Fort Recreation Park Two miles from Catawba Falls Campground downstream to the Old Fort Recreation Park. This is a completely different experience from the Marion Greenway DH section — more remote, wooded, and scenic, with the Catawba Falls Campground providing direct waterfront access and overnight options. All three species stocked in slightly unequal March and May events. Standard hatchery-supported regulations apply — bait and spinners are permitted here. Old Fort Recreation Park at the lower end is a well-known community landmark and provides additional access. 2.0 mi 35.6200, -82.1500 ↗

Hatchery Little Buck Creek Game Land Portion · 2.0 miles · 350 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March only
March Only — No May Stocking Event

Little Buck Creek stocks in March only — no May event. The stocking window for this stream is narrow. Plan your trip for March or you've missed it for the year.

Stream / Section Miles GPS
Little Buck Creek — Game Land Portion Two miles of game land water on Little Buck Creek, stocked once annually in March — 350 fish total. All three species. The game land setting provides good solitude and light pressure compared to the county's more accessible waters. A single March event means fish density is concentrated immediately post-stocking but diminishes faster than two-event streams. Best fished in the first week to ten days after the March stocking.
