Transylvania County has earned the nickname "The Land of Waterfalls" — and the same mountains that create those cascades feed some of the coldest, clearest trout streams in Western NC. The Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest is the county's crown jewel: 14 miles of catch-and-release, fly-fishing-only wild trout water upstream, a legendary wild-fish "miracle mile" below the Pisgah Fish Hatchery, and a stocked lower section near Davidson River Campground. Add the East Fork French Broad and Little River Delayed Harvest fisheries, plus the French Broad headwaters tributaries, and Transylvania is one of the premier trout destinations in the Southeast. Here's everything you need for 2026.

⚠️ Special Regulations — Know Before You Go
Davidson River — Three Sections, Three Different Rules
Upper River — Headwaters to Avery Creek (~14 miles)

Catch-and-release, fly-fishing-only. Wild rainbows, browns, and brookies. Not stocked. Paralleled by US-276 and FR 475-A. High-gradient pocket water in the gorge sections, accessible via Davidson River Trail. Technical water — the fish are wild and educated.

Middle River — "Miracle Mile" Below Pisgah Fish Hatchery

Not stocked, but wild trout grow large on nutrient-rich hatchery effluent. Cold, clear, and loaded with invertebrates. Size 18–28 midges and 6X–7X tippet are standard. Visible fish, challenging presentation — don't mistake approachable for easy. Check current NCWRC regs for this section.

Lower River — Hatchery Supported (Stocked March, April, May & June)

Stocked 4 times annually — March, April, May, and June. 5,600 fish per year across 1 mile adjacent to Davidson River Campground. All legal tackle, 7 fish/day creel limit, no size restriction. Fly anglers often skip this section — which means less pressure and willing fish for those who work it.

⚠️ Downstream of Public Water — Private Trophy Section

Below the public hatchery-supported section, near Pisgah Forest, a privately managed stretch is controlled by Davidson River Outfitters and requires paid guided access. Purple-painted trees mark the boundary. Do not fish past them. The vast majority of the Davidson — including all stocked and C&R sections — is public water within Pisgah National Forest.

Primary Access: US-276 through Pisgah National Forest · Davidson River Campground · Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education · Forest Road 475-A (upper sections)

Catch & Release Best Practices

  • Use barbless hooks — or pinch down your barbs before you fish
  • Wet your hands before handling fish; dry skin strips protective slime
  • Keep fish in the water as much as possible — no flopping on the bank
  • Use rubber-mesh nets; they're far gentler on fins, gills, and eyes
  • Hold the fish facing the current until it swims out of your hands on its own
  • Quick photo, quick release — the fish thanks you, so does the next angler
