Work a drift on the Davidson, walk to Little River in DuPont, or spend the day exploring the French Broad forks around Rosman. Transylvania County trout fishing offers three different ways to build a trip from Brevard. The upper Davidson’s Catch and Release water rewards a patient approach; two Delayed Harvest sections provide scheduled spring and fall stocking; and four Hatchery Supported entries give you more river and tributary choices. Pick the kind of day you want before choosing the road to follow.
Choose your Transylvania fishing trip
Davidson and Pisgah: Choose this route when you want a river-focused day near the Pisgah Forest entrance. Coontree and Sycamore Flats provide named public locations on different regulation sections, making the Avery Creek boundary an essential part of the plan.
Little River and DuPont: Choose this for a trip that combines fishing with walking. Hooker Falls offers a clear parking destination, but the river is shared with waterfall visitors. Arriving early gives you more flexibility before the access area fills.
Rosman and the French Broad forks: Group East Fork, Middle Fork, West Fork, or the upper main river into a valley-based outing. These names refer to different sections with different regulations, so choose one primary destination and one nearby backup.
The three named public-area pins identify access facilities. The four approximate stream pins locate the correct mapped water, not guaranteed parking or permission to cross private property. Use established access and respect posted land. The NCWRC fishing map shows the wider network.
Davidson River: two listed regulation sections
Above Avery Creek, the Davidson is classified as Catch and Release/Artificial Flies and Lures Only Trout Waters. The current designation allows artificial flies and lures with a single hook; it is not fly-fishing-only. Avery Creek, Looking Glass Creek, Grogan Creek, Cedar Rock Creek, and John Rock Branch are excluded from that Davidson listing and should not automatically be assigned its rules.
Below Avery Creek, the Davidson’s Hatchery Supported section continues to the lower USFS boundary. The familiar “Miracle Mile” nickname near the hatchery does not create a third regulation category.
Setzer hatchery is undergoing renovation and is out of production. Older descriptions of hatchery-fed fishing conditions should not be treated as a current promise. Catch and ReleaseDavidson RiverUpper river • Coontree public access
The upper Davidson is the part of a Brevard trip to set aside for careful presentations and time on one piece of water. Its Catch and Release designation runs down to Avery Creek. Coontree gives you a named public starting point on this section without building the trip around the hatchery grounds.
Designated section: Headwaters to Avery Creek, excluding Avery Creek, Looking Glass Creek, Grogan Creek, Cedar Rock Creek (tributary to the Davidson River at Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery), and John Rock Branch.
Access: Coontree Public Fishing Area on US 276 provides a listed river-access location. Use the designated recreation-area parking and established access to the Davidson. The pin identifies the fishing area, not a particular parking space.

Fishing approach: Start with a Pheasant Tail or Zebra Midge and concentrate on drift before reaching for a smaller fly. When fish rise, observe their feeding rhythm and approach from a position that keeps line off the feeding lane.
Delayed Harvest in Transylvania County
The two DH waters have different 2026 delivery windows. East Fork’s fall stocking is scheduled for October 5–9; Little River’s is scheduled for November 9–13. A scheduled week is a delivery plan. The Daily Trout Stocking Update reports recent completed stockings.

East Fork is the Delayed Harvest choice for a trip on the Rosman side of the county. It follows its own valley and should not be confused with the main French Broad or its Middle and West forks. The current lower DH boundary is a signed point below Whitmire Falls, not a blanket extension to the French Broad confluence.
Designated section: East Fork Baptist Church to 350 yards downstream of Whitmire Falls, marked by a sign on both banks.
Access: Use the East Fork Road corridor to orient yourself within the church-to-Whitmire-Falls section. The approximate pin is on NCWRC’s mapped DH reach. The church and falls are boundary references, not permission to park on adjoining private property.

Fishing approach: Work a short run with a nymph before moving to the next pool. A Hare’s Ear or Pheasant Tail in sizes 14–18 is a practical starting point, with a more visible pattern available if fish respond to it.
Delayed HarvestLittle RiverDuPont State Recreational Forest • Hooker Falls access
Little River adds a walking-and-fishing day to a Transylvania trip. The DH water runs through DuPont’s waterfall landscape, where hikers and anglers share the access areas. Hooker Falls is a useful named starting point near the lower end of the section; the falls are a landmark, not a place to climb around with a rod.
Designated section: Confluence of Lake Dense to 100 yards downstream of Hooker Falls.
Access: Use Hooker Falls Access Area on Staton Road. Friends of DuPont identifies it as an angler access with parking and restrooms; spaces are first come, first served. Follow established paths to appropriate river access and stay clear of waterfall drops and slick ledges.

Fishing approach: Fish the reachable seams and pools with short, controlled casts. Let the trail determine your route between pieces of water rather than trying to wade continuously through the waterfall section.
Keep the next fly within reach
The Essentials Fly Box combines dry flies and nymphs for a day that changes from subsurface fishing to rising trout. Start with a Hare’s Ear or Prince Nymph, then reach for a Blue Winged Olive or Adams when surface feeding calls for a different presentation.
Hatchery Supported river sections
These are the four HS entries in the current county regulations. Use the official Hatchery Supported schedule and select Transylvania for individual delivery weeks. The seasonal fishing closure applies even when stocking is taking place.

The lower Davidson is the county’s Hatchery Supported option near the Pisgah Forest entrance. Avery Creek separates it from the upper Catch and Release section. Sycamore Flats provides a named river-access destination, so the campground does not need to be the starting point for a fishing visit.
Designated section: Avery Creek to lower U.S. Forest Service boundary line.
Access: Sycamore Flats Picnic Area is a Forest Service recreation site with access to the Davidson. Use its designated parking and access paths. Stay within the listed HS section rather than following the river onto downstream private property.

Fishing approach: Cover the near-bank holding water before making a longer cast. After choosing a fly, adjust depth and the angle of the drift to work the current breaks in front of you.
Hatchery SupportedFrench Broad RiverNorth/West Fork junction to Island Ford Road Access
The main French Broad brings a broader river option to a Rosman-area itinerary. This HS entry begins where the North and West forks join and ends at the Island Ford Road Access Area. A launch farther downstream near Brevard is not automatically inside this trout section.

Access: The approximate pin locates the mapped HS river between the fork junction and Island Ford. Plan an established bank-access or launch location within that corridor; the stream pin itself is not a parking or launch instruction.

Fishing approach: Break the river into manageable lanes. Fish a reachable seam or bank edge rather than assuming you need to wade across a wide channel to find useful water.
Hatchery SupportedMiddle Fork French Broad RiverUpstream US 178 bridge to the French Broad
Middle Fork belongs with the Rosman and US 178 side of your trip. It is a separate stocked tributary entry, not another name for the main river. The official wording specifies the upstream US 178 bridge, which matters when locating the beginning of the managed section.
Designated section: Upstream U.S. 178 bridge to French Broad River.
Access: Use the upstream US 178 bridge and French Broad junction to orient yourself. The pin identifies the current mapped HS reach between those limits.

Fishing approach: Keep the rig simple and casts accurate around available cover. A single nymph is easier to place and control than a long, complicated setup on confined water.
Hatchery SupportedWest Fork French Broad RiverSR 1312 to the North Fork junction
West Fork is another distinct Rosman-area route, ending where it meets the North Fork to form the main French Broad. The name alone does not tell you which upper branches are included; the listed SR 1312 boundary defines the start of this HS section.
Designated section: S.R. 1312 to confluence with North Fork French Broad.
Access: The approximate coordinate locates the mapped West Fork HS section. Use the SR 1312-to-North-Fork corridor to choose an established access location rather than treating the entire drainage as stocked water.

Fishing approach: Fish the edges of deeper runs with a controlled nymph drift. Where the current slows, reduce weight before changing to a larger fly.
Access update for the Davidson
As of September 21, 2026, Recreation.gov lists Davidson River Campground as closed for renovation with an anticipated October 1 reopening. Do not build a September fishing trip around campground entry. Sycamore Flats is a separate recreation site, and Coontree is another named river-access option farther upstream. 2026 Transylvania stocking plans
NCWRC’s 2026 county master list allocates 17,400 trout across six stocking entries. These are planned allocations, not a count of fish already delivered. The upper Davidson Catch and Release entry is separate and has no allocation in that county list.

Seasonal flies and approaches
Fall: Keep East Fork’s October and Little River’s November delivery windows separate in your plan. A Pheasant Tail or Hare’s Ear in sizes 14–18 is a useful starting point on the DH waters. Carry a small egg pattern or Woolly Bugger for a more visible presentation. On the upper Davidson, watch the water before rigging and prioritize a clean drift over repeated fly changes.
Winter: Give slower holding water more time and fish the warmer part of the day. Zebra Midges in sizes 18–22 and small nymphs cover useful starting presentations. Use enough weight to reach the feeding lane, then adjust the drift so the fly moves naturally through it.
Spring: Keep dries ready alongside the nymphs. Blue Winged Olives can matter in cool weather, while caddis and other mayflies become worth watching as conditions warm. An Adams or Elk Hair Caddis can be a practical searching dry when you see surface activity. The Davidson, East Fork, and Little River need not produce the same hatch on the same afternoon.
Summer: Carry a thermometer and let water temperature set the plan. Give trout a break when the water is warm instead of assuming a mountain setting guarantees cold water. When conditions are suitable, ants, beetles, and a dry-dropper can cover bank-side feeding. On DuPont trips, choose your fishing time with the shared trails and waterfall visitors in mind.
For a first visit, fish fewer locations more carefully. A well-controlled drift on one reachable run teaches you more about the day than a string of quick stops across Pisgah, DuPont, and Rosman.
Pack for changing water
The All-Water Arsenal brings a broader mix of dries, nymphs, attractor patterns, and egg flies for trips that move between the Davidson and the French Broad forks. Try a dry-dropper along the banks, or switch to nymphs when fish are feeding below the surface.
Beyond the stocked sections
The county regulations also list all waters in Gorges State Park as Wild Trout Waters, along with the Whitewater River downstream of Silver Run Creek to the South Carolina line. These are separate destinations from the seven entries above and are not part of the stocking table.
DuPont’s Forest Service guidance distinguishes the Little River DH reach from other forest streams and the river below its DH endpoint. Use the forest’s fishing information when planning a different stream there, rather than extending Little River’s DH rules to the whole forest. DuPont fishing classifications.
Licenses and regulation dates
A standard North Carolina inland fishing license includes Public Mountain Trout Waters. There is no separate trout add-on. License exemptions include anglers under 16. Buy a license through Go Outdoors North Carolina.
Delayed Harvest: The protected season begins October 1, 2026, and runs through June 4, 2027. Use artificial lures with one single hook; natural bait and trout possession are prohibited. Fishing closes 30 minutes after sunset June 4 and resumes at 6 a.m. June 5 for anglers under 16. All anglers may fish from noon that day under Hatchery Supported rules.
Hatchery Supported: During the open season, the daily trout limit is seven, with no minimum size or bait restriction. These Transylvania sections close March 1–April 2, 2027, and reopen at 7 a.m. April 3. Stocking during a closure does not open the water to fishing.
Upper Davidson Catch and Release: Open year-round. Artificial flies and lures with a single hook are allowed; trout and natural bait may not be possessed while fishing this section.

Brevard makes a useful base for choosing among these routes. Keep a Pisgah day, a DuPont day, and a Rosman-area day distinct enough that you spend the trip fishing rather than moving between trailheads.
