Burke County NC Trout Fishing
Burke County
Trout Fishing
Burke County sits at the edge of the Blue Ridge Escarpment — where mountain streams tumble down into the Catawba River Valley and South Mountains State Park. The crown jewel is Jacob Fork Creek, one of the most popular Delayed Harvest destinations in the NC Piedmont and foothills. Add the Linville River gorge, Henry Fork, Carroll Creek, and a unique Special Regulations stretch on the Catawba River, and Burke County offers more variety than most anglers realize. Here's everything you need to plan your trip.
Catch & Release Best Practices
- Use barbless hooks — or pinch down your barbs before you fish
- Wet your hands before handling fish; dry skin strips protective slime
- Keep fish in the water as much as possible — no flopping on the bank
- Use rubber-mesh nets; they're far gentler on fins, gills, and eyes
- Hold the fish facing the current until it swims out of your hands on its own
- Quick photo, quick release — the fish thanks you, so does the next angler

Access is trail-only — plan for a full day or overnight. The tailwater section below Lake James powerhouse is more accessible and benefits from cold, consistent water temperatures year-round.
C&R Artificial Henry Fork — South Mountains State Park Portion
The section of Henry Fork within South Mountains State Park carries the highest protection designation: Catch & Release / Artificial Lures Only. No harvest, ever. Natural bait is prohibited. This is where the wild fish live — native brook trout and self-sustaining rainbow and brown populations that have earned their protection.

Burke County demands versatility — from high-pressure DH fish on Jacob Fork to wild brook trout in South Mountains headwaters. Our loaded fly boxes for NC trout water cover the full spectrum. Purpose-built, not random.
South Mountains State Park parking fills up on spring weekends, especially during stocking weeks. Arrive before 8am or plan a Tuesday–Thursday trip. The High Shoals Falls trailhead is the most popular access point — the upper stretches above the falls see less pressure.
Jacob Fork DH fish are educated. Downsize to 5X or 6X tippet. Midges (#18–22), small Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, and soft hackles are consistent producers. Post-stocking, egg patterns and San Juan Worms work fast — switch to dries once fish settle in after 48–72 hours.
The Linville Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the Eastern US. Access is trail-only — plan 4–6 hours round trip minimum from most trailheads. Overnight USFS permits are required for camping in the gorge. The no closed season makes it a viable winter destination for the serious angler.
The Morganton section 14-inch minimum means most fish you'll catch are below legal size — this is quality water managed for larger fish. Fish the slower pools and deeper runs with streamers or larger nymphs. No closed season means it can fish year-round when other waters are off-limits.
Due to the Setzer Hatchery renovation, 2026 Hatchery Supported stocking in Burke County is compressed to April only (vs. March–May in normal years). Check the NCWRC weekly stocking schedule at ncpaws.org before making the drive — stocking dates can shift.
A valid NC Fishing License and Trout License are required for all trout waters. Buy online at gooutdoorsnorthcarolina.com before you go. State Park entrance fees apply at South Mountains State Park separately from fishing license requirements.
