At 20.9 miles and 4,200 fish annually, the Swannanoa River is the largest stocked water in Buncombe County by a significant margin — and one of the few urban trout fisheries in WNC. The stocked corridor runs from River Walk Park in Asheville downstream to the Wood Ave Bridge, passing through one of the most densely populated areas in the mountains. Accessibility is exceptional, but post-stocking pressure is real. Target early mornings and mid-week trips for the best shot at fresh fish with light competition.

Bent Creek runs through the Bent Creek Experimental Forest — a unit of the Pisgah National Forest just south of Asheville. The NC Arboretum boundary marks the lower end of the stocked section. This is one of the most scenic and trail-accessible trout streams in the county, with the surrounding forest providing exceptional canopy and cold-water retention through the season. The Arboretum and adjacent greenway trail system make this a legitimate destination for combining a fishing trip with a hike or trail run.

Lake Powhatan is the only stocked lake in Buncombe County and the largest stillwater in the county's stocking program at 7 acres. Rainbow trout only — no brook or brown trout stocked. The lake sits inside the Bent Creek Experimental Forest adjacent to the Bent Creek creek corridor, making it a natural combo trip with the nearby stream. The USFS campground at Lake Powhatan is a popular basecamp for anglers fishing this part of the county.
