Swain County is Western NC trout fishing at its most wild. The county is home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Nantahala National Forest, and Fontana Lake — and the streams that flow through and around those landscapes are some of the most diverse in the region. The Tuckasegee River Delayed Harvest fishery anchors the county's stocked program with 9,600 fish annually, while Alarka Creek, Deep Creek, the Nantahala River, and Connelly Creek round out a system that covers everything from roadside access to genuine backcountry. Here's everything you need for 2026.

Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians — Qualla Boundary Waters
Tribal Waters Require a Separate Permit

A significant portion of the Qualla Boundary — the land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians — falls within Swain County. The EBCI manages approximately 30 miles of premier trout water stocked with nearly 400,000 fish annually from their own tribal hatchery. These are some of the most heavily stocked streams in the entire Southeast. However, NCWRC state fishing licenses are not valid on EBCI waters — a separate Tribal Enterprise Fishing Permit is required.

Key EBCI Waters in Swain County

Oconaluftee River — The central hub of Cherokee fishing, stocked twice weekly with rainbow, brown, brook, and palomino trout.
Raven Fork — Includes a 2.2-mile Trophy Water section designated for catch-and-release fly fishing only. Home to record-sized trout. Requires a separate Trophy Water Permit.
Straight Fork — A tributary of Raven Fork offering a more secluded experience.
Bunches Creek & Soco Creek — Additional stocked streams within the tribal system.

Permit Requirements

Daily Tribal Permit: $10/day — required for anyone age 12 and older. Children under 12 fish free with a permitted adult.
Trophy Water Permit (Raven Fork): $25/day or $75 annual — required in addition to the standard tribal permit for the Trophy section.
Multi-day and annual options are available. Permits are sold at nearly two dozen authorized local businesses and through the official Fish Cherokee website.
State licenses are neither required nor accepted on EBCI waters.

The Tuck Continues — Jackson County DH Section

Tuckasegee River — Swain County Delayed Harvest Section NC 19 Bridge at Darnell Farms to Slope Street Bridge in Bryson City. At 9,600 fish stocked annually, this is by far the most heavily stocked water in Swain County — and one of the larger DH programs in Western NC. Two notable points: this section stocks rainbow and brown trout only (no brook trout), and it receives three stocking events — March, May, and a fall November event. The Bryson City stretch of the Tuckasegee is scenic, wading-friendly, and right in town, giving you easy access, nearby food and lodging, and a legitimate shot at quality fish throughout the DH season. 2.2 mi 35.4280, -83.4490 ↗

Hatchery Alarka Creek USFS Boundary to Fontana Reservoir · 12 miles · 2,200 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown
Stream / Section Miles GPS
Alarka Creek — USFS Boundary to Fontana Reservoir The longest stocked stream in Swain County at 12 miles, running from the US Forest Service boundary down to Fontana Reservoir. Alarka Creek drains the high country west of Bryson City and flows through classic Southern Appalachian mountain terrain — rhododendron-lined banks, pool-riffle structure, and cold water well into the season. The reservoir terminus is worth noting: fish can move between the creek and Fontana Lake in the lower reaches, which occasionally produces surprises. All three species stocked — brook, rainbow, and brown — across March and May events. 12.0 mi 35.3850, -83.5800 ↗

Hatchery Nantahala River Macon County Line to Wesser Falls · 8 miles · 1,800 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown
⚠️ Heavy Whitewater Traffic — Know When to Go

The Nantahala River Gorge is one of the most popular whitewater rafting destinations in the Southeast. Spring and summer weekends bring heavy commercial raft traffic through this section. For the best fishing experience, target early mornings before rafting operations kick off, or plan a weekday trip. The stretch near Wesser is particularly busy on warm-weather weekends.

Stream / Section Miles GPS
Nantahala River — Macon County Line to Wesser Falls This section of the Nantahala picks up where Macon County's stocked section ends, running 8 miles through the famous Nantahala Gorge to Wesser Falls. The gorge is deep enough that it stays shaded and cold well into summer — water temps here are notoriously frigid year-round thanks to cold-water releases from Nantahala Dam upstream. That cold water is great for trout but can make for a brisk wading experience even in May. Rainbow, brook, and brown trout all stocked. Note: this is the same river stocked in Macon County upstream — for details on that section, see the Macon County trout fishing page. 8.0 mi 35.3450, -83.5950 ↗

Hatchery Deep Creek GSMNP Line to Tuckasegee River · 2 miles · 1,600 fish annually · Rainbow, Brown
⚠️ GSMNP Boundary — Two Different Rulesets

The stocked section runs from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park boundary downstream to the Tuckasegee River — 2 miles of NC state-managed water. Above the GSMNP line, Deep Creek enters the national park where different federal regulations apply: artificial lures only, single barbless hook, catch-and-release on some species, and a valid NC fishing license is still required. Do not assume state regs apply inside the park boundary. Check current GSMNP fishing regulations at nps.gov/grsm before fishing the upper section.

Stream / Section Miles GPS
Deep Creek — GSMNP Line to Tuckasegee River The stocked section of Deep Creek covers 2 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park boundary down to its confluence with the Tuckasegee River near Bryson City. Notable for stocking rainbow and brown trout only — no brook trout in this section. The creek runs cold off the Smokies and has a good riffle-pool structure through its lower reach. Proximity to Bryson City and the Deep Creek Campground means this water sees consistent pressure, but it produces reliably after stocking events in March and May. 2.0 mi 35.4530, -83.4380 ↗

Hatchery Connelly Creek Camp Branch to Tuckasegee River · 7 miles · 800 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown
Stream / Section Miles GPS
Connelly Creek — Camp Branch to Tuckasegee River A 7-mile tributary of the Tuckasegee River stocked from Camp Branch downstream to the confluence. Connelly Creek winds through the Whittier area of Swain County and offers a quieter alternative to the better-known Tuckasegee DH section nearby. All three species stocked — brook, rainbow, and brown — across March and May events. Smaller creek character with tighter structure and more technical wading than the main river. Worth fishing the week after a stocking event when fish have spread out from the stocking points and begin holding in predictable lies. 7.0 mi 35.4100, -83.3800 ↗
