Haywood County is one of the most productive trout fishing destinations in Western North Carolina, sitting squarely in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains region. The West Fork Pigeon River Delayed Harvest fishery anchors the county — a 2-mile stretch stocked three times a year including a fall window — while Jonathan Creek, one of the longest hatchery-supported streams in the district at 12 miles, gives anglers a massive piece of accessible water to explore. Add Richland Creek running through downtown Waynesville, the Pigeon River, Cold Springs Creek, and the West Fork's Left Prong, and Haywood County offers 26.9 miles of stocked trout water with options for every skill level and fishing style. Here's everything you need for 2026.

⚠️ Special Regulations — Know Before You Go
West Fork Pigeon River — DH Section & Left Prong HS Section
Delayed Harvest Section — Queens Creek to Game Lands Boundary (2 miles)

Artificial lures and flies with single hook only. Catch-and-release required October 1 through the Saturday before the first Saturday in June. Stocked three times: March (2,640 fish), May (1,320 fish), and October (2,640 fish) for a total of 6,600 fish annually — the highest stocking density of any single water in the county. Located upstream of Lake Logan on the Haywood County Game Lands. The October stocking is the crown jewel — cool water, actively feeding fish, and far less pressure than the spring window.

Left Prong — Hatchery Supported Section (5 miles)

The Left Prong of the West Fork runs from Tom Creek downstream to Queens Creek — where it meets the DH section boundary. Standard hatchery-supported regulations apply here: all legal tackle, standard creel limit. Stocked April and May with 480 brook, 480 rainbow, and 240 brown trout. Know which section you're on before you fish — the DH boundary matters.

West Fork Pigeon River — Delayed Harvest Queens Creek to Game Lands Boundary upstream of Lake Logan. A 2-mile DH section on the Haywood County Game Lands accessed via NC-215 south of Canton. The West Fork is a classic Southern Appalachian mountain river — clear, cold, and hemlock-shaded with a mix of productive pools and riffles. The DH section sits in a relatively remote setting compared to more roadside-accessible DH rivers in the region, which keeps pressure lower and fish less educated. The October stocking (2,640 fish — the largest single stocking event of the year on this water) is the standout opportunity: water temps are ideal, browns are starting to think about the spawn, and streamers and large nymphs will move fish that have been in the river all spring and summer. Spring DH fishing from March through May is equally strong. Budget extra time to explore — the access requires a short walk from the parking area. 2.0 mi 35.4012, -82.9876 ↗

Hatchery Jonathan Creek Stocked April & May · 12 miles · 4,480 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown
Stream / Section Miles GPS
Jonathan Creek From SR 1307 Bridge (west) to the Pigeon River confluence. At 12 miles, Jonathan Creek is the longest hatchery-supported stream in Haywood County and one of the longest in the district — a significant piece of water that gives anglers room to spread out and find their own water even on busy spring weekends. The creek flows through the Maggie Valley / Jonathan Creek corridor along US-19, making it one of the most accessible trout streams in WNC. Good wade-fishing throughout with a mix of pool, riffle, and run water. Stocked heavily in both April and May — 1,120 brook, 1,120 rainbow, and 560 brown trout per stocking for a total of 4,480 fish across the season. The May stocking is often overlooked in favor of the April rush, making it a smart time to visit for reduced pressure and willing fish. 12.0 mi 35.5234, -83.0456 ↗

Good early-morning option when the main river is already crowded. 3.9 mi 35.5589, -82.9934 ↗
