Caldwell County punches well above its weight for trout fishing. Wilson Creek — a federally designated Wild and Scenic River tucked into the Pisgah National Forest — anchors one of the most popular Delayed Harvest fisheries in the NC mountains. Add the upper Wilson Creek hatchery section, Buffalo Creek, Joes Fork, Boone Fork Pond, and the Pee Dee River, and Caldwell offers everything from easy roadside access to serious backcountry water. Here's everything you need to plan your trip.

Catch & Release Best Practices

  • Use barbless hooks — or pinch down your barbs before you fish
  • Wet your hands before handling fish; dry skin strips protective slime
  • Keep fish in the water as much as possible — no flopping on the bank
  • Use rubber-mesh nets; they're far gentler on fins, gills, and eyes
  • Hold the fish facing the current until it swims out of your hands on its own
  • Quick photo, quick release — the fish thanks you, so does the next angler

Wilson Creek — Wild & Scenic River Designation

Wilson Creek carries federal Wild and Scenic River status — one of only a handful of streams in NC with this designation. It protects the free-flowing character of the creek and its outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values. The designation means no dams, no major diversions, and a commitment to preserving the river corridor in perpetuity. Fish it while it's still the real thing.

Built for Wilson Creek — Loaded & Ready

Wilson Creek DH fish key in on fly selection based on how long they've been in the water. Fresh stockings call for egg patterns and San Juan Worms. After a week, switch to caddis dries, soft hackles, and small nymphs. Our loaded fly boxes for NC trout water cover the full progression — no guesswork at the tailgate.

Tips for Caldwell County Streams
From the water, not a brochure
Wilson Creek — Know Your Boundaries

Wilson Creek has multiple regulation zones on the same stream. Phillips Branch marks the DH/HS boundary. Lost Cove Creek marks the upper DH boundary. The posted signs on the water are your guide — when in doubt, check the sign on the nearest bank before you fish.

Wilson Creek — Fly Selection

Fresh stockings (first 48–72 hours): egg patterns, San Juan Worms, Wooly Buggers. After a week: switch to a #16 tan caddis, Parachute Adams, or small soft hackles. Trout pellet-sized flies — tan, brown, or olive — produce consistently throughout the season on this stream.

The Gorge Section

The Gorge on Wilson Creek offers the most dramatic water and the least pressure — steep banks and a longer hike keep casual anglers away. Fish the pocket water tight to the boulders. Streamers work well in higher flows. A 9-foot 4wt or 5wt is the right tool for the Gorge's varied conditions.

Boone Fork Pond

Boone Fork Pond fishes best early morning before Blue Ridge Parkway visitors arrive. The pond sits at elevation — bring a layer even in March. Standard nymph or indicator rigs work fine. Elk Hair Caddis and small Adams dries produce on calm mornings when fish are rising along the edges.

2026 Stocking Note

Wilson Creek's 2026 stocking schedule is compressed to 3 events (vs. a typical 4–5) due to the Setzer Hatchery renovation. This means fewer stocking windows but the same total fish spread across fewer dates — post-stocking fishing should be excellent when it happens. Check ncpaws.org for the weekly stocking schedule before your trip.

License Required

A valid NC Fishing License and Trout License are required on all Caldwell County trout waters. Buy online at gooutdoorsnorthcarolina.com. At Boone Fork Pond, NPS regulations also apply — no license required for youth under 16 on NPS waters.
