19,900 Fish Stocked (2026)
Mar–Jun Peak Season

Graham County is the most remote county in North Carolina — no traffic lights, no interstate, and more national forest than anywhere else in the state. That remoteness is the point. The Snowbird Creek drainage, the Cheoah and Calderwood reservoirs along the Little Tennessee River, and a network of Nantahala National Forest tributaries make Graham County one of the most diverse trout fishing destinations in WNC. Big Snowbird Creek anchors the county's only Delayed Harvest fishery, while nine additional hatchery-supported waters spread across the county give you options from 2-mile pocket water runs to 640-acre reservoir flats. Here's everything you need for 2026.

⚠️ Special Regulations — Know Before You Go
Big Snowbird Creek — Two Sections, Two Different Rules
Upper Section — Delayed Harvest (2.8 miles)

USFS Footbridge at Old Railroad Junction to USFS Road 2579. Catch-and-release only Oct 1–June 5, artificial lures/flies with single hook only. 4,500 fish stocked annually across March, May, and October events. The backcountry setting — no road access to the DH section itself — keeps pressure lower than most DH streams in the state.

Lower Section — Hatchery Supported (8.4 miles)

USFS Road 2579 to SR 1127 Bridge. All legal tackle, 7 fish/day creel limit, no size restriction. 3,400 fish stocked annually across March and May. The longer, more road-accessible section — stocking points are reachable from USFS Road 2579 and SR 1127, making this the higher-traffic stretch.

Primary Access: USFS Road 2579 (Snowbird Road) · SR 1127 (Big Snowbird Road) · Snowbird Creek Trail (upper/DH section)
🔵 Delayed Harvest Streams

Big Snowbird Creek — Delayed Harvest Section USFS Footbridge at Old Railroad Junction to USFS Road 2579. One of the most unique DH fisheries in Western NC — the section is accessed primarily by trail along the old railroad grade, meaning no vehicle access directly to the water. That extra half-mile of walking keeps this DH stretch significantly less crowded than comparable fisheries on the Davidson or Tuckasegee. The Snowbird drainage holds some of the clearest, coldest water in the Nantahala National Forest. Pool-riffle character with classic freestone structure. Worth the walk. 2.8 mi 35.3200, -83.9100 ↗

Hatchery Cheoah Lake Entire lake · 640 acres · 2,800 fish annually · Rainbow only · Stocked April
Water / Section Size GPS
Cheoah Lake — Entire Lake At 640 acres, Cheoah Lake is the largest stocked water in Graham County and one of the larger trout lakes in Western NC. A TVA impoundment on the Little Tennessee River system, Cheoah is stocked with rainbow trout only — 2,800 fish in a single April event. The sheer size of the lake means fish spread out quickly after stocking, which rewards anglers who know where to look: tributary mouths, rocky points, and shaded coves in the upper reaches. A kayak or small watercraft opens up sections inaccessible from the bank. 640 ac 35.3600, -83.8500 ↗

Hatchery Calderwood Reservoir Entire lake · 150 acres · 2,400 fish annually · Rainbow only · Stocked April
Water / Section Size GPS
Calderwood Reservoir — Entire Lake A 150-acre TVA impoundment just downstream of Cheoah Lake on the Little Tennessee River. Stocked with rainbow trout only in a single April event — 2,400 fish annually. The deep, cold waters of Calderwood hold fish well after stocking due to favorable temperature stratification. Bank access is limited by the steep gorge walls in some sections — scout access points before your trip. Like Cheoah, a small watercraft dramatically increases the water you can cover. 150 ac 35.3800, -83.8200 ↗

Hatchery Big Snowbird Creek — Lower Section USFS Road 2579 to SR 1127 Bridge · 8.4 miles · 3,400 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown
DH Section is Upstream — Different Rules Apply

Above USFS Road 2579, Big Snowbird Creek transitions to a Delayed Harvest section — catch-and-release, artificial only, Oct 1–June 5. Make sure you know which section you're fishing. The boundary is USFS Road 2579 / the road crossing. See the Big Snowbird Creek DH accordion above for full details on the upper section.

Big Snowbird Creek — Hatchery Supported Section USFS Road 2579 to SR 1127 Bridge. The longer, road-accessible section of Big Snowbird Creek covering 8.4 miles. All legal tackle, 7 fish/day creel limit. Stocked in March and May with 3,400 fish annually across all three species. More accessible than the DH section above — stocking points reachable by vehicle — which also means more pressure on stocking weekends. Fish the mid-week window after a stocking event for the best experience. 8.4 mi 35.3050, -83.9300 ↗

Stream / Section Miles GPS
Tulula Creek — SR 1201 to Lower Bridge on SR 1275 At 11 miles, Tulula Creek is the longest stocked stream in Graham County — running from SR 1201 down to the lower bridge on SR 1275. Flows through the Robbinsville area giving it more roadside accessibility than many Graham County streams. The tradeoff is more fishing pressure near road crossings; wade upstream from the bridges for better solitude and less-pressured fish. Stream / Section Miles GPS
Panther Creek — USFS Line to Fontana Reservoir A compact 2-mile section from the US Forest Service boundary down to Fontana Reservoir. Despite its short length, Panther Creek punches above its weight at 1,000 fish stocked annually — a solid fish-per-mile ratio. The Fontana Reservoir terminus creates a natural destination for fish moving downstream; target the lower reach near the lake mouth in the days following a stocking event.
