Polk County sits on the southern Blue Ridge escarpment where the mountains drop sharply into the Piedmont foothills — and the Green River cuts right through the heart of it. The Green River Delayed Harvest section, anchored by the Fishtop Falls Access Area, is one of the more scenic DH fisheries in the state with dramatic gorge character and cold, clear water year-round. The Green River also carries a separate hatchery-supported section immediately downstream. The Pacolet River rounds out the program with 8 miles of water along the NC 108 corridor. Three waters, 7,200 fish, and a stocking calendar with a November fall event instead of the more common October window.

⚠️ Special Regulations — Know Before You Go
Green River — Two Sections, Two Different Rules
Delayed Harvest Section — Fishtop Falls Access Area to Cove Creek · 3.3 miles

Artificial lures and flies with single hook only. Catch-and-release required October 1 through early June. Three stocking events: April, May, and November. 5,000 fish annually. Note that the DH section does not stock in March — the season opens with April and May events, then a November fall event. Cove Creek is the downstream boundary of the DH section and the upstream boundary of the HS section below.

Hatchery Supported Section — Cove Creek to Brights Creek · 4.2 miles

Standard HS regulations — all legal tackle, 7 trout/day creel limit, no size limit. Two stocking events: March and May. 1,200 fish annually. Note that the HS section stocks March and May — not April. Cove Creek is the shared boundary: DH water is upstream, HS water is downstream. Confirm which section you are on before fishing.

Key Landmark: Cove Creek divides both sections — DH water is upstream toward Fishtop Falls, HS water is downstream toward Brights Creek.
Green River DH — November Fall Event, Not October

The Green River DH section's fall stocking event is in November — not October as is more common in the WNC DH program. If you're timing a fall trip around the typical October DH stocking window, Polk County runs a month later. The November event stocks 2,000 fish — equal to the April event and double the May event — making it the second-largest stocking of the year on this section.

Flagship Fishery — 5,000 Fish · Gorge Setting · Fishtop Falls Access

The Green River DH section is the premier trout fishery in Polk County. The Fishtop Falls Access Area at the upper boundary provides organized parking and trail access into the gorge. This is not roadside fishing — plan for a hike and bring everything you need for a full day. The gorge character keeps the water cold and the fish healthy well beyond the spring stocking window.

Green River — Delayed Harvest (Fishtop Falls Access Area to Cove Creek) 3.3 miles of Delayed Harvest water from the Fishtop Falls Access Area downstream to the Cove Creek confluence. Three stocking events annually — April, May, and November — totaling 5,000 fish. All three species each event. The April stocking is the heaviest at 2,000 fish, May is lighter at 1,000, and November comes back strong at 2,000. No March stocking on the DH section — the season opens with the April event. The Fishtop Falls Access Area is a managed NCWRC access point with parking and a maintained trail into the gorge. Cove Creek at the downstream end is the boundary with the HS section below — do not cross it believing you are still in DH water. 3.3 mi 35.3100, -82.1600 ↗

Gorge Fishing Demands the Right Nymphs.

The Green River DH section runs cold and deep through a dramatic gorge. Fish hold in structure and they're not chasing — you need to get down to them. Our Depth Charge box puts 72 tungsten bead nymphs in your hands. Built for exactly this kind of water. Open it and fish.

Hatchery Green River — Hatchery Supported Section Cove Creek to Brights Creek · 4.2 miles · 1,200 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March & May
⚠️ March & May — No April Stocking · Different Schedule From the DH Section Above

The Green River HS section stocks in March and May — not April, unlike the DH section immediately upstream. An April trip targeting the HS section will find water that has already been fished down from the March event with no fresh fish until May. Plan accordingly. Cove Creek is the upper boundary — DH water and its catch-and-release rules are upstream of this point.

Green River — Hatchery Supported (Cove Creek to Brights Creek) 4.2 miles from the Cove Creek confluence at the upper boundary downstream to the Brights Creek confluence. Equal March and May events — 600 fish each, 1,200 annually. All three species. Cove Creek is the same landmark that serves as the lower DH boundary immediately above — HS water starts at Cove Creek and runs downstream to Brights Creek. Standard HS regulations apply throughout this section. Brights Creek at the lower end provides a clear downstream boundary. 4.2 mi 35.3000, -82.1500 ↗
