Mar–Apr Stocking Window

Alleghany County sits in the northwestern corner of North Carolina along the Virginia border — high, remote, and largely off the radar of anglers who stick to the better-known WNC trout corridors farther south. Nine hatchery-supported streams receive 5,572 fish across March and April in 2026, all flowing through the New River drainage. The Little River anchors the county program at 15.5 miles and 2,100 fish, with Brush Creek and Prather Creek rounding out the top tier. No Delayed Harvest fisheries, no stocked lakes, no fall events — this is a pure spring fishery. The stocking window is tight, the pressure is light, and the streams are as scenic as anything in the state.

Pine Swamp Creek — March Only · No April Stocking

Pine Swamp Creek is the only stream in Alleghany County that stocks in March only — no April event. If this is your target water, plan your trip around the March stocking window. Waiting until April means you've already missed it.

Hatchery Little River SR 1128/1129 intersection (800 ft downstream) to Lower PMTW Boundary · 15.5 miles · 2,100 fish annually · Brook, Rainbow, Brown · March & April
Largest Stocked Stream in Alleghany County

At 15.5 miles and 2,100 fish annually, the Little River is the backbone of the Alleghany County trout program. The lower boundary at the PMTW (Public Mountain Trout Water) line is an important landmark — regulations may differ above that boundary. Confirm the PMTW boundary location before fishing the upper section.
